Chinese culture and Chinese language education are the core elements for the Chinese community to yield self-identification awareness. By having different perceptions regarding Chinese culture and Chinese language education, a major conflict inevitably ignited between Tan and Dong Jiao Zong. Ironically, MCA who claimed to represent the Chinese, did not receive support from the vast majority of the Chinese community; Dong Jiao Zong did. This book examined the relationship between Tan and the Chinese community within the period of his 13-year MCA leadership. The objectives of this book were to investigate, analyze and explore the rationales motivations of Tan that led to his various political decisions, and the effect of his standpoint on the interaction with the Chinese community. The root-cause and consequences of such tension between Tan and the Chinese Community were also examined.
