This book primarily deals with the historical narrative by Yü Ying-shih on the development of the role of Chinese intellectuals. By using Yü’s conceptual frameworks, it emphasises the effectiveness and the importance of the historical narrative on Chinese intellectuals demonstrated by Yü, in analysing the continuity and transformation in Chinese history. The discussion is mainly consisted of three parts, firstly on the origins and development of the establishment of his conception of the “Chinese intellectuals” through his “Chinese feelings”, followed by the search for human order by the traditional scholar-officials, and the transformation of values made by the modern intellectuals, respectively.

本书主要讨论余英时先生对中国知识人角色变迁的历史论述。通过余先生本人的概念框架，着重分析其知识人论述对阐释中国历史的延续与转化的有效性和重要性。本书通过余先生特有的“中国情怀”来尝试理解他开创中国知识人的缘起、变迁和规模，并以他对传统知识人历史变迁的阐释和现代知识人价值转化的抉发来展开讨论。
